I believe the past is relevant, sometimes more than others of course. In most cases we are seeing history being repeated, so it is most relevant.

Game of Thrones: Women are coming

The Westoros catch phrase should be changed from “Winter is coming” to the “Women are coming”. Talk about female dominance, these women aren’t just surviving their kicking ass, taking names and leaving bodies:

image

Cersei Lannister:
Killed half of Kings Crossing, including her son and daughter-in-law and took the Iron Throne.

imageArya Stark:
Killed Walder Frey’s son, baked them into a pie and served them to Walder imagebefore killing him. ‘A girl just wants to go home’.

Sansa Stark:
Saved the day at the ‘Battle of Bastards’, fed her husband to his own dogs, and then said; ‘Sure Jon, you can be King of the North’.image

Lyanna Mormont:
Reminded a room full of old white guys that she was at the the ‘Battle of the Bastards’ while they chose to stay home, told them to get their sh—t together, embarrassing them into apologizing.

image

Brienne Tarth:
Is she the only knight left with any integrity? The big question is who makes the ‘booty’ call first; The Hound or Jaeme Lannister?

Now that this trio is hooked up look out. Everyone keeps overlooking them, but they just keep moving forward… and they got DRAGONS

imageTargaryen Daenerys:
Consumed in flames twice and leader of three armies, but people keep telling her its time to surrender… usually their last words.

image

Yara Greyjoy:
Surrounded by inept and unreliable men all she really wants is to pillage and plunder.

image

Missandel:
Looking pretty, loves a eunuch, she seems to always be stepping over dead bodies.

OK, these two top the list of: “Why weren’t they killed off instead of insert any name here .”   Boring and disruptive, but especially boring.image

National Police Week / Peace Officers Memorial Day

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, which is sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, is one in a series of events which includes the Candlelight Vigil, which is sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.)

Much of the holiday centers on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C., whose walls feature the names of more than 19,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Amended in 1994, Bill Clinton, through Public Law 103-322, directed that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff on May 15. According to a proclamation by George W. Bush in 2002,

"Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. These observances also remind us of the ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts of extreme violence and terrorism."

At the National Peace Officer's Memorial Service on May 15, 2013, President Barack Obama paid tribute to fallen law enforcement officers, closing:

“The 143 fallen officers we honor today put themselves on the front lines of that fight, to preserve that quality of community, and to protect the roots of our greatness. They exemplified the very idea of citizenship -- that with our God-given rights come responsibilities and obligations to ourselves and to others. They embodied that idea. That’s the way they died. That’s how we must remember them. And that’s how we must live. We can never repay our debt to these officers and their families, but we must do what we can, with all that we have, to live our lives in a way that pays tribute to their memory. That begins, but does not end, by gathering here -- with heavy hearts, to carve their names in stone, so that all will know them, and that their legacy will endure. We are grateful to them and we are grateful to you.”

Please, please, please, no more inspiration… New Years or not, no more resolutions…

Every New Year million of people take on the task of setting forth resolutions for the comming year. Resolutions that range from the simplistic to the complex, from the mundane to the famulous, from the satirical to the serious.

Many of these resolutions take the form of promises to ourselves, others, or God.

Many of us seek sources for these resolutions; personal experiences, goals and aspirations failed or forgotten, literature, the bible, our heroes.

Happy New YearTo push ourselves towards carrying out these resolutions we write them down or to put external pressure on our selves to keep us from backsliding we share these resolutions. We further endeavor to embrace the completion of these resolutions by embracing like minded people or philosphies that echo our efforts. We use the words or practices of these people and philosophies as inspiration.

The irony of New Years resolutions is that the process is practiced by everyone to a certain degree. The degree that it is practiced is strangly emphasized by the time of year, eventhough we make resolutions year round. To pressure ourselves, under the guise of ‘encouragement’ we embrace the use of inspiration.

So, every New Year, we are exposed to, or choose to expose others to, our resolutions and the accompanying inspirational messages that follow. As anyone on facebook can attest to, there is no better way to bombard our ‘freinds’ with these inspirations than Facebook. What used to be accomplished through cards in the mail, then a phone call and then e-mail, can now be accomplished by broadcasting them over the internet.

The problem is we are now afflicted with this sharing of inspirations (evidence of personal resolutions) on a daily basis. Resolutions have been popularized by the New Year, but in reality, have never been limited to to the New Year. We make resolutions throught the year, monthly, weekly, even daily. The unfortunate reality now is that we can support our personal resolutions on a daily basis by sharing our inspirational message with ease. No trip to the drugstore for an inspirational card, and no time need be spent on composing an original inspirational message. Its now just a google search, or a bookmarked web site, followed by a click and we have shared our inspiration with everyone who needs to share our commitment.

This does no harm. Nobody has to read them or be inspired by them. If it serves to keep someone, the ‘author’ or recipoent, on track then it is a possitive thing. We see it everyday and it does no harm, but please save us from that freind who can’t decide on an inspiration for the day or a signifigant moment. All wee need is one Facebook freind who insist on 10 inspirational messages every morning, or the one who plays catch-up with 30 inspirational messages whenever they miss a day. (Arn’t they the ones who always fret over you not responding to a particular inspiration or even menial post of theres?)

Having said all that I must confess that I suspect I to am guilty. Of course if you read what I posted you would realize that mine were different… more sincere, more inspiring, more to the point, not as prolific, an definatly important.

I’m just saying.

OK, instead of a New Years resolution, or a year ending/beginning New Years message, I propose a challenge. A year ending challenge to where or how you seek inspiration. Do you seek inspiration from sources that reafirm what you beleive? Or do you accept a chalenge to seek inspiration, in whatever form, from a source that you expect to disagree? Click here to accept the challenge.

The first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel was…

… a 63 year old women!
I was listening to Radiolab podcast on NPR about the fear of Fallen(ing) when they told a story about what it was like to go over the falls, and the consequences of some of the trips. This led me to do a little research on the subject. (The podcast can be found at the bottom of this article.)   GlennDL
October 24th 1901
She decided to go down the falls after she lost her teaching job. She was heading to the poor house if she didn’t think of something else to do?
Annie Taylor was the first person to conquer the falls in a barrel. After climbing inside her airtight wooden barrel, the air pressure was compressed to 30 p.s.i. with a bicycle pump.  image
Though bruised and battered Annie made it, she expected fame and fortune.
Annie died in poverty.
Desiring to secure her later years financially, and avoid the poorhouse, she decided she would be the first person to ride over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Taylor used a custom-made barrel for her trip, constructed of oak and iron and padded with a mattress. Several delays occurred in the launching of the barrel, particularly because no one wanted to be part of a potential suicide. Two days before Taylor's own attempt, a domestic cat was sent over the Horseshoe Falls in her barrel to test its strength. Contrary to rumors at the time, the cat survived the plunge and 17 minutes later, after she was found with a bleeding head, posed with Taylor in photographs (That’s the kitty on top of the barrel.)

FaceBook Predators: Not just after kids.

I was listening to the radio today [NPR] when an interesting story came on concerning how social network sites are being used to locate adults by the information they post. So its not just our kids that should be aware of what they post, or job hunters who need to be careful what potential employers may find when doing a search on FaceBook or Google. Now it seems creditors, collectors, the government and the repo-man are using the social networks to find you.
So, deadbeat dads beware, poking that girl on-line may land you in custody.
Hiding assets from your spouse? Then don’t tell the world your taking out the new boat on a fishing trip this weekend.
Avoiding wage garnishments? Then don’t friend your new boss.
Did you just friend the repo-man who’s looking for your Bentley?
Do you have a stalker out there you’re hiding from?
Oh what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive….  bad-boys, bad-boys what u gonna do. What you gonna do when the repo-man comes for u…..
